South Dakota Badlands

Badlands National Park in South Dakota is so-named for its inhospitable, difficult-to-traverse terrain. The Lakota people who moved to the area in the 1700s referred to the area as "mako sica" meaning bad or eroded land. While not very inviting for a traveller or settler, the land does look spectacular when illuminated by the setting sun.
Design
The design features a digitally-altered photograph with an impressionist / oil painted style. The background has a subtle topographic base pattern. The state outline is created with a series of high resolution digital brushstrokes and drips.
