South Carolina - The Palmetto State

The sabal palmetto, South Carolina's state tree, is referenced in its nickname, state flag, state seal and even in the state's salute. Though the second design element is commonly referred to as a "moon," the flag's designer was actually referencing a symbol created during the Revolutionary War. Col. William Moutrie waved a flag with a crescent symbol fashioned out of the coats and hats of his soldiers to notify the residents of Charleston that the British were near.

The design features a digitally-altered photograph with an impressionist / oil painted style. The state outline is created with a series of high resolution digital brushstrokes and drips.
